I have been doing cutlery business for over 15 years, but I grew up leather bag and case craft's company in Japan.
My father leather craft's factory was a part of my house where was my playground.
I had helped his business from childhood to grown-up such as gluing contact cement with brush or riveting or thinning leather, etc.
My father is almost 90 years old, and still running the business.
The front side of the strop is very smooth surface of Cordovan, and the back side of the strop is horse hide called strips which is right above portion of Cordovan (horse butt).
The front side is Cordovan strop and the other side is Suede strop which is little rougher than Cordovan side.
They take tanning the leather for 6 months.
The Cordovan and horse hide came from one of world-famous top-quality leather tanning company Horween in Chicago, USA.
Lots of high-end Cordovan craft companies use their Cordovan.
Oval shape of Cordovan (approximately 650mmX500mm) costs about $400.
We can make only 3 pieces of 600mmX65mm perfect strops from it, if we are lucky.
The horse hide is also fine grit strop, but it is not as smooth as the front side Cordovan.
We are able to use the Cordovan side as finishing razor blade stropping.
The horse hide side is able to use as one lower grit stropping.
The Cordovan side and the horse hide side are sticked on one piece approximately 6-7mm thickness.
The strop case was made by my father factory in Japan.
The strops should hang on the clip side on the wall, and the other side should hold on tight with one hand to make straight and tension the strop, and moving forward shoulder side gently.
