GC (Green Carborundum) #220 Rough Grit Whetstone
Size: 8 1/4 inch X 2 3/4inch X 2 inch (210mmX70mmX53mm)
Weight: 3lb. 1.2oz. One thing great thing about GC rough grit hone is really good for stainless steel blade sharpening. Stainless steel is added on at least 13 % of Chrome, so one of Chrome added steel feature toughness comes out. That is why stainless steel is hard to sharpen. It is not from hardness. It is from toughness, so it is slippery on the whetstone, and it takes much longer to sharpen on the whetstone compared with the same hardness of pure carbon steel. GC rough grit hone is gripped more than any other hone, so it works very well for blue steel, semi-stainless steel, and stainless steel like added Chrome steels.
Even though we sharpen pure carbon steel, GC gripped the blade very well, and keeping on losing worn sharpening particles, so it cuts very fast. One thing weak point of GC is very fast to wear, so we have to keep on flattening the hone all the time. For me, if I need to remove lots of metal from the blade, I use hard rough grit hone on the bottom, and using GC for lapping hone, and I do not wash away the GC slurry, and using the slurry for the sharpening. That means what I am able to get the hard flat sharpening surface, and I am able to use cut fast GC slurry in the same time.
